Tigers Still Walking The Path
WARSAW – While plenty of bad was focused on the beginning of the Warsaw girls basketball season, there is still some very good emerging. A 52-33 win against visiting Elkhart Memorial Wednesday night had the Lady Tigers move to 3-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference and stay alive in the conference race.
A 15-4 run in the first quarter put Warsaw in firm command, only to push the lead to 15 entering the fourth quarter.
Part of the scoring binge for Warsaw was the career-high night from Kenzie Welk, who dropped home 19 points. Welk was 7-11 from the floor and hit all three of her three-point attempts.
Dayton Groninger scored 10 points for the Tigers in the only other player to hit double digits in the scoring column. Groninger scored all five of her baskets in the paint, making hay in the middle by hauling in six offensive rebounds and 12 overall to cap the double-double. Groninger also had five assists.
Page Desenberg had another yeoman’s performance for Warsaw (6-13), recording seven points and five rebounds.
Cydney Lapczynski paced the Chargers (9-9, 2-2 NLC) with eight points, seven rebounds and three steals. Lapczynski, however, was held to 3-11 shooting and made just one of seven three-point attempts.
Warsaw won the JV contest over Memorial 52-28.
Warsaw and Goshen are both sitting at 3-1 in the NLC, with Northridge and NorthWood a game ahead at 4-0. Saturday will go a long way in determining what happens with the four teams, as Goshen hosts Warsaw and Northridge hosts NorthWood.
