Sisters Manage Family Business As Mother Nears 103rd Birthday
BENTON HARBOR, MICH. — It’s a family-owned store in Berrien County that’s been in business for nearly 30 years.
But the owners have seen way more Christmases than that, with one of them ready to experience her 103rd holiday.
If you enjoy the spirit of Christmas, there’s no shortage of it at “The Christmas Tree” in Benton Harbor.
“That’s what people say to us when they walk in,” said Kathleen Park, one of the owners. “We’ve even had people come there to get cheered up after a funeral.”
In the back of the store, it’s sisters Madeline and Kathleen providing the Christmas cheer. Their love for Christmas is pretty obvious; their age, though, isn’t as easy to see.
“I’m in my early 80s,” said Madeline Kimball, Kathleen’s sister. “And I don’t know how I got this old in the first place.”
“I’m 75 years old,” Park said. “I can’t believe I am that old already either.”
And their third business partner?
“My mom is 103 this year,” Kimball said. “We talk business with her, and she has ideas and creative ideas, so that’s where our creativeness comes from.”
The three have been running the store for the last 25 years, making everything from special gift baskets to holiday wreaths.
“You come here because you can’t find these things anywhere else,” said George Rice, who lives in St. Joseph. “They have everything you’re looking for right here.”
“You can find special little things that come up,” Rice added. “I love the back in there where the food is.”
When we were growing up, I was a little sister and she didn’t really want me around a whole lot,” Park said. “Now that we’re older, we are very best friends.”
And still going strong at 75, 81, and 103 — proof that age knows no limit when it comes to Christmas spirit.
