KENT COUNTY, MICH. — A Michigan woman is getting lots of attention on social media after sharing a heartwarming encounter she had at a Meijer bakery on Facebook.
Lisa Sarber Aldrich went to a Meijer in Gaines Township on Sunday to pick out a birthday cake.
She says she asked an employee behind the bakery counter if she could write a message on the cake.
“She said she would, and after a long time, she came and presented me with this cake,” Aldrich wrote on Facebook. “I looked her In the eye and said thank you before I even looked at the cake.”
As the picture below shows, the writing wasn’t as neat as you would expect from a bakery, but Aldrich thanked the employee anyway, and walked to the front of the store to buy the cake.
When she got there, other employees thanked her for her kindness, explaining that the woman behind the counter has autism and doesn’t write on cakes.
Aldrich wrote on Facebook, “one cashier put her arm on my shoulder and said ‘the girl who wrote that has Autism. Thank you for smiling and thanking her- even though she’s not supposed to write on cakes, you probably made her day.’ So I guess the moral of the story is that kindness is important!”
On Monday, Aldrich wrote in an update in a Facebook comment: “The wonderful lady who helped me with the cake did NOT get in trouble- they told her to do whatever she needed to do to serve the customer’s needs, and she did just that.”
As of 7 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday, more than 77,500 people had shared the Facebook post, including Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley.
Aldrich said in a Facebook post on Tuesday, “So… my cake story has over 100 shares. Didn’t expect that! I feel humbled and blessed! I’m also a little sad that being nice seems so rare, and people are pleasantly surprised by niceness. Sometimes it’s harder to be nice. I get it…I’m certainly not perfect. I’m sure many of you have had a time when you were NICE to someone… maybe we should all share our nice stories more often!”
In another post Tuesday afternoon, she wrote, “I am totally overwhelmed by God’s goodness, and how he has used this cake story! I am sitting here weeping and reading through 100+ messages from people all over the country who have a loved one with Autism, thanking me. I just feel the need to say again- I didn’t do anything special. Be nice. That is all. I can’t believe how awesome God is that he is using this story to bless so many people! God is so, so good”
