WARSAW — Too late to be mushrooms, paintings and sculpture popped out to enter the Lakeland Art Association Fall Competition Nov. 1. Winners were announced Sunday, November 8 at a reception held in the gallery. The works were judged by Daniel Malicki, art teacher at Whitko High School.
Excellent work was evaluated and ranged from three dimensional pieces to photography to oil paintings to acrylics to watercolors and pastels to ink zentangles (you will have to visit to see what a zentangle is).
The first place award went to Sarah Creason of Whitley County for her oil painting titled “A Walk In The Woods.” Creason recently lost her left hand to cancer and is a seven-time cancer survivor whose courage and humor are legend among those who know her. Creason currently teaches at Cancer Services of Fort Wayne every Tuesday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in a free open-admission class.
Concentrating on the play of light, Creason gives credit to Fred Doloresco for being her greatest influence and mentor. Largely self-taught through workshops with many artists, Creason has earned awards in numerous competitions. In her biography ,she says “this and miles of bad canvas is how I learned to paint.” Creason is a member of nine art associations including the prestigious Hoosier Salon. Creason offers classes at her “Fishtales” Studios near Columbia City and has work in three other galleries on a regular basis in addition to her generous free class at Fort Wayne Cancer Services.
