Night Of Magic At Wawasee Bowl
SYRACUSE – Thursday night was magical for one set of lanes at Wawasee Bowl. The pair saw both a 300 game by Drew Wright, and a “Break the Bank” by Ryan Coquillard.
Wright started off the night with his first 13 strikes, 12 being a perfect 300 game. Wright’s throwing style is fairly unique in that he employs a two-handed release. Two-handers are becoming more and more popular in the bowling community, as the world’s number one-ranked bower, Jason Belmonte, is also a two-handed bowler. Wright’s style is different still, as he uses his thumb and two fingers in his dominant right hand whereas the majority of two-handers don’t put their thumb in the ball with their dominant hand.
Wright’s pinfall totals for each game were 300, 245 and 227 for a 772 series. Thursday’s 300 game marked his first sanctioned 300 game, and third perfect score overall.
The second bit of magic was bowled from the hand of Coquillard. He “Broke the Bank”, which is to say that he got a select three strikes per game, picked by drawing numbers before the night began.
The first game required Coquillard to roll a strike in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. In the second game it was the second, ninth and tenth frame. Finally, the seventh, eighth and eleventh frames were required in the last game of the series. The eleventh frame is only possible if a player gets a strike or spare in the tenth frame, and then strikes again on the fill ball immediately thereafter.
Coquillard took home 80 percent of an $853 prize bank, which had been rolling over weekly since midway through last season.
