Penn, St. Joe Advance At Goshen
GOSHEN – Penn and South Bend St. Joseph’s are on yet another collision course in the girls soccer state tournament. Both teams won regional semi-final games Wednesday in the Goshen Girls Soccer Regional, Penn a 7-0 final over Culver Academy and St. Joe a 2-1 win against Northridge.
Penn, ranked No. 2 in the Class 2-A state poll, showed it has the firepower to overwhelm its opponents. The Kingsmen have outscored its opponents 21-0 in its three tournament games to date, and fired off 29 shots on a defenseless Culver Academy side Wednesday.
Penn took a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals from Sydney Bright and Kristina Lynch, then erupted in the second half. Molly McLaughlin, Mackenzie Mason, Kacey Wood, Hannah Ehrhardt and Melanie Xouris all found the net in an 18-minute stretch for Penn. Alexis Marks, Courtney Seigel, McLaughlin and Ehrhardt all had assists in the match.
The Academy (11-3-2) were held to just two shots in the match, and keeper Hannah Fisher did what she could, making 14 saves.
In the second game, Northridge were in command for most of the match, but gave up two goals late to find its demise.
Brea Baltazar took a pass from Ellie Lengacher in the 29th minute to convert, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead. That score would stand until the 69th minute when St. Joe equalized on a goal from Nicole Nemeth, assisted by Mereidth McGrevee. The Indians crushed Ridge’s dreams five minutes from time when Samantha Kambol used a feed from Morgan Scott to drive the dagger, putting St. Joe up 2-1 and securing a date with Penn in the regional final.
St. Joe outshot Northridge 12-6 and Ridge keeper Meghan Cawood made eight saves. The Raiders bow out with a final mark of 13-4-4.
Penn (19-0-2) will meet St. Joe (15-4) in the regional final Saturday at 2 p.m. Penn defeated St. Joe, 6-1, in their regular season meeting as part of the Northern Indiana Conference, to which Penn won the title.
