Rainy Weather Doesn’t Halt Oktoberfest Cheer
WINONA LAKE — Though the weather was cold and drizzly, the Village at Winona did not let the weather dampen the Winona Lake Octoberfest celebration. Festivities for those of all ages marched on throughout the morning and afternoon celebrating Germany’s longest running celebration.
The event began at 10 a.m. with a cruise-in along the canal featuring vehicles from the Northern Indiana Lakes British Motor Club. The cars delighted event goers as children and adults alike were able to paint pumpkins, have their faces painted, enjoy free caramel apple making, concessions, hayrides and even pumpkin bowling.
Food vendors offering various German-style grub as well as a beer tasting paid homage to the origins of the celebration. According to Jeremy Marsh, event organizer with The Village At Winona, a total of ten breweries attended the event offering over 60 beers to be tasted.
Music was offered in a fun and interesting way by Karl Rider, of Wabash, who brought an organ that much like a giant music box, played tunes on its own for guests of the event. Rider noted the organ has been in his family for 35 years. The organ was built by the Spencer Organ Company in Ohio for Rider’s dad following a European style.
For both safety and convenience, Rider transports the organ via a trailer and delights crowds with various styles of music such as polka. Rider noted though he is retired, he does make occasional appearances with the organ from time to time. Rider explained he had received a request from the former Dane Miller to attend events in Winona from time to time with his organ — a request is has tried to honor to this day.
Cerulean open its garden for a night of bikes, brews and live music starting at 4:30 p.m. The annual 10k Hash Fat + Flat invited participants to run, walk or ride a 5k loop, passing through The Garden each time for a free beer.
The evening commenced with a finish line party at 6 p.m. and live music at 6:30 p.m.
