Allen Heltzel
Allen E. Heltzel, 73, of rural Akron, passed at 2:23 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, surrounded by his family at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 3, 1942, in Rochester, to Marvin and Maxine (Voreis) Heltzel. He was married on Dec. 20, 1963, in Deedsville, to Karen S. Deeds she survives.
He was the founder of Heltzel Construction in 1971 as well as being a farmer. Prior to that he worked for R. R. Donnelly and Sons of Warsaw.
He was a 1960 graduate of Akron High School. Then he graduated from Greer Technical Institute of Chicago, Ill. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Rochester and the Land Improvement Contractors of America. He had been a past member of the Akron Lions Club where he had been a past president and enjoyed frying fish. He and his wife wintered for 10 years in Pine Island, Florida with their motorhome. In addition to other memberships he was also a member of the Family Motor Coach Association in the Hoosier Cruisers Chapter and the American Coach Association in the Great Lakes Chapter. He enjoyed traveling in his motorhome to many events such as power shows or any other reason to drive on the open road.
He is survived by his wife: Karen Heltzel, Akron; sons: Dale (Kim) Heltzel, Akron; Thomas (Lynn) Heltzel, Lafayette; Hans (Mimi) Heltzel, Carmel; grandchildren: Ethan, Bailey, Victoria, Vanessa, Amanda and Andrew; sister: Carolyn Smith; brother: Paul Heltzel; and his companion: Greta (his chocolate toy poodle.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws: Dale and Violetta Deeds.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 10, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Akron Cemetery, Akron. Rev. Kerry O’Brien will officiate.
