Syracuse BZA Approves Temporary Signs For Oakwood
SYRACUSE — How long is too long for temporary signs to be up? That was the debate at the Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals meeting Thursday evening, Sept. 17.
The discussion centered around temporary signs in Oakwood Resort.
Last month, Oakwood Resort’s petition for an exception and a variance to allow two temporary signs in a residential district was tabled. The property is located at 849 E. Lakeview Road.
At Thursday night’s meeting, after considerable debate, the three-man board voted to allow an exception for one temporary sign in a residential district in Oakwood.
The temporary sign is only a short-term solution, said the owner.
“Our goal is to put permanent signs,” said J.R. Parent. “We are trying to meet a need at a seasonal time.”
Afraid of setting a precedent, the board was reluctant to approve the two cases at all. “I’m concerned,” said board member Larry Coplen.
The other debate was Oakwood Resort’s petition for a variance to allow two temporary signs to be located anywhere on the property. It wants to have signs up longer then 30 consecutive days, more than two times a year and at 72 square-feet each, where ordinance allows no more than 32 square-feet.
A letter from the Wawasee Property Owners Association stated billboards should be “downsized and limited in use.”
The board decided to grant the variance by allowing two ordinance-compliant signs, no larger than 32 square-feet and no more than 30 days.
Richard Williams’ petition for a variance was approved. He wants to add onto his current deck, to be constructed 0 feet from the east road right of way and 2 feet, 3 inches from the south property line. The property is located at 1019 S. Lake Drive in Oakwood.
Pickwick Development LLC’s petition to change and alter a previous case was approved. In 2013, two uses were approved. Now, it wants to allow three additional commercial uses (existing clinic and retail or professional uses) to be added to the property, for a total of five uses.
The property is located at 107 W. Pickwick Drive, Syracuse. The property is the site of a MedStat clinic and a doctor’s office. Verizon is expected to move in, as well, with another 10,000 square-feet left to be used. With no remonstrators, the case was approved.
WSLCC Properties’ petition for an exception was approved. Main Channel Marina wants to expand a marina use in a residential district by allowing the addition of a storage building, which will be used for boat storage.
The property is located at on the west side of Lake Side Drive and 150 feet north of Palm Drive. There were no remonstrators.
The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Oct. 15, at Syracuse Town Hall.
