Irish Win Thriller, Lose Quarterback For Season
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Notre Dame won a game, but lost much more than that Saturday.
Irish quarterback Malik Zaire suffered a broken right ankle during Saturday’s 34-27 win at Virginia and will miss the rest of the season, coach Brian Kelly confirmed.
Zaire’s ankle got caught under a Cavaliers defender during a run, with the No. 9 Fighting Irish up 19-14 late in the third quarter. He was carried to the sidelines and eventually put on a cart.
Zaire underwent X-rays at the Scott Stadium facilities which confirmed the fracture.
The redshirt sophomore quarterback was making his third career start. He had completed 7 of 18 passes Saturday for 115 yards and a touchdown, while rushing 10 times for 87 yards.
Redshirt freshman DeShone Kizer will take over as the team’s starting quarterback, Kelly said. On Kizer’s first play after Zaire’s injury, he handed off to running back C.J. Prosise for a 24-yard touchdown run.
Kizer finished with 92 yards and two touchdowns on 8-of-12 passing, including a 39-yard go-ahead strike to wide receiver Will Fuller for the game winner with just 12 seconds to play to silence the Cavaliers’ comeback bid.
Zaire, who led the Irish to a 38-3 season-opening win at home over Texas last Saturday, was named the starter after Everett Golson transferred. Golson is now the starting quarterback at Florida State.
The Irish lost starting running back Tarean Folston for the season in the win over Texas due to a knee injury.
