Additional Agenda Items For Wawasee School Board
SYRACUSE — During its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening Sept. 8, the Wawasee school board also considered the following agenda items:
• The board approved donations of a Regal ski boat from Grey Hershberger, an Integrity boat trailer from Griffith’s Wawasee Marina and 10 stools from the Syracuse NAPA store to the marine mechanics class of Wawasee High School. The stools will also be used by automotive students.
• A Dekko Foundation grant of $57,000 for the Cultivating Primary Development program was approved. It is the final payment of a three year grant.
• Lakeland Youth Center in Syracuse is now offering a $1,000 college scholarship for a male and female graduating from Wawasee High School beginning in 2016.
• Wawasee Middle School is seeking to connect more with the community through dramatic productions, skits, visiting nursing homes, inviting groups to the school for presentations in the planetarium and more. Students will work on projects during their Warrior time.
• The board approved adoption of the school corporation budget and there was no public input.
• Approval was given to appoint Barbara Beer to the Milford Public Library Board and Robert Kennedy to the Syracuse Public Library Board. Kennedy replaces Fay Medlock, who resigned.
• Approval was granted to replace an aging 1999 Ford Taurus with an all wheel drive 2016 Chevy Equinox at a cost of approximately $23,500 as part of the vehicle fleet of the school corporation.
• The board approved a trip in the summer of 2017 for Spanish students at the high school to visit the Dominican Republic. They will put in eight hours of community service while there.
• Milford School fifth-graders were given approval to take a field trip to Chicago to visit the Science & Industry Museum and the Lincoln Park Zoo Oct. 9.
• And the board approved changing the wording on property deeds for two tracts of land at Milford School to reflect Wawasee Community School Corporation owns the property. For some reason, the deeds still show the previous name of the school corporation the Lakeland School Corporation as the property owner.
