Warsaw Survives Start To Clip Bellmont
An early goal surrendered to Bellmont was a wake-up call for the Warsaw girls soccer team, as it responded with four goals to beat the Braves, 4-1, Saturday at the Bishop Luers Invite in Fort Wayne.
Bellmont scored in the ninth minute on a free kick to put the Braves up 1-0, but Warsaw would take over from there.
A feed from Liz VanWormer to Mariah Rivera did the trick 12 minutes later as Rivera would hammer home the equalizer. Rivera would have a huge game, recording the hat trick with a goal in the 22nd minute and again in the 58th minute.
Anna Grill would score the first goal of her career in the 66th minute to cap the Tiger scoring.
VanWormer, Grill and Anna Sullivan were credited with assists for Warsaw.
Chloe Snow would make four saves in net to preserve the victory.
The win pushes Warsaw’s mark to 2-0 on the season with a big Northern Lakes Conference showdown on the horizon Tuesday at home against Plymouth, a 5 p.m. JV kick, varsity to follow.
Tigers Upend Unfamiliar Face
Two second-half goals helped Warsaw survive Grand Ledge, Mich., in a 2-1 victory at the Bishop Luers Invite in Fort Wayne.
Grand Ledge carried a 1-0 lead into the second half, only for Warsaw to net a pair of unanswered goals. Joaquin Juarez had the first Tiger goal off a free kick.
With 10 minutes to time, Eric Ocock recovered a blocked shot bu Juarez and tucked home the winner, eventually giving Warsaw its first victory of the season.
Warsaw (1-1) will visit Fort Wayne Northrop Tuesday.
Ladies Almost Catch Carroll At Huntington Invite
The open of the 2015 girls cross country season had the No. 9-ranked Warsaw Tigers and No. 6-ranked Carroll Chargers gunning for the top spot at Saturday’s Huntington Invitational. Carroll would capture the crown, scoring 48 points, but Warsaw was right behind in second place at 59 points.
Warsaw had three runners in the top 12, led by Allison Miller’s 19:25, fourth-place overall finish. Mia Beckham would run a lifetime-best time of 19:44 and place seventh and Hannah Dawson was 12th at 20:03.

The second-place finish for Warsaw was the best finish at Huntington for the team and, per head coach Scott Erba, the closest Warsaw has come to catching the perennial state contenders from Huntertown.
In the JV race, Claire Kehler led the way for Warsaw by winning the individual championship at 21:43, the first win of Kehler’s career. Mallory Hooks (4th, 22:03) and Sierra Palmer (6th, 22:16) were top performances for the Lady Tigers. Palmer’s time was a near-five minute drop from her top 2014 effort. Carroll won the JV race with 43 points to Warsaw’s 45 points.
Warsaw will join the boys Tuesday for a double running of the Warsaw Classic invite at the school course on Logan St. The girls are seeking its fifth straight title.
