Wawasee Drops Opener On Pitch
The Wawasee boys soccer team struggled to find the back of the net in its season opener Tuesday. The Warriors welcomed in Westview (aka the “other” Warriors) and suffered a 1-0 loss. Westview scored the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute of the game but Wawasee had its chances late despite two questionable yellow cards.
The Warriors missed a penalty kick in the 78th minute that could have tied things up. The game was described as a “good physical match” by Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp. Wawasee (0-1) will travel to South Bend Riley Thursday.
Warrior Harriers Cruise To Victories
The Wawasee boys cross country team enjoyed three wins Tuesday as they hosted Bremen, NorthWood and Fairfield. Wawasee’s Luke Griner placed second with a time of 17:30. Spencer Hare took third for Wawasee right behind Griner. Jaxon Bame (18:17) took fifth. Sam Griner (18:23) and Ben Hoffert (18:26) took sixth and seventh, respectively.
Landon Miller of Fairfield won the event with a time of 17:05.
In the girls race Wawasee did not miss a beat. Aubrey Kuhn led the way for Wawasee and the pack winning the event with a time of 20:39. Allyssa Fanning (20:48) of Bremen took second. Elizabeth Zorn (21:45), McKenzie Smith (21:59) and Bailey Yoder (23:03) rounded out Lady Warriors in the top ten finishing fifth, eighth and 10th, respectively.
Both teams move to 3-0 and will compete at the Prairie Heights Invitational Saturday.
Lady Warriors Remain Undefeated
The Wawasee girls golf team picked up two more wins on Tuesday. Wawasee defeated Marian (215) and West Noble (233) by shooting a 169 at Maxwelton GC.
Kylee Rostochak led the way with a 40, earning medalist honors for the match. Aubrey Schmeltz continued her hot streak and finished with a 41. Mikala Mawhorter and Kamryn Foy both shot a 44 while Madison Beaman rounded things out with a 45.
Marian was led by Molly Pendergast’s 52. Paige Shearer’s 42 was low for West Noble.
“It was good to see us break that 170 barrier again and to have five scores in the 40s,” stated head coach Steve Coverstone.
Wawasee will play in the Rochester Invite at Round Barn this Saturday.
