Goshen City Council Tables Civil Rights Amendment
GOSHEN —The Goshen City Council has decided to table additions to a city ordinance that would add civil rights productions for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, according to an announcement posted Tuesday on the city’s website.
The Goshen City Council, according to democratic mayor Allan Kauffman, who proposed the additions, decided to table the proposal due to confusion and lack of a good consensus on the long term consequences of amending the civil rites ordinance.
“Based on the tone of many emails and phone calls received, there is concern that public input based on misinformation will be unduly negative and paint Goshen as less welcoming than it really is to our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer residents,” Kauffman said in a statement. “There needs to be more time given to getting good information to replace bad information and how these civil rights protections have worked in other cities/states.”
The council will not bring back the issue this year, but those who live and and work in Goshen will be able to voice their opinion and input to council members at upcoming council meetings.
