TinCaps Clobber Captains
EASTLAKE, Ohio – The TinCaps clobbered the Lake County Captains, 7-1, on Thursday night at Classic Park. Fort Wayne built a 7-0 lead over the first six innings as it ended a five-game losing streak.
Take your pick — credit the offense (17 hits), the pitching (only one walk, and one late run), the defense (no errors), or the fact that for the first time all season, everyone on the team, including manager Francisco Morales, wore their green socks up high. Whatever it was, it all clicked for the TinCaps on a 75-degree evening.
Fort Wayne (15-13, 47-49) raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first against Jordan Milbrath (L, 3-9), as shortstop Ruddy Giron doubled in a run and right fielder Franmil Reyes delivered a two-out RBI single. In the second, second baseman Luis Urias extended the lead to 4-0 with a two-run single.
The TinCaps’ lead ballooned to 5-0 in the fourth when Giron added another RBI hit and 7-0 in the sixth after a bases-loaded balk and a Reyes sacrifice fly.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Chris Huffman (W, 4-6) shoved for six innings. He shut the Captains out as he scattered three hits and a walk and struck out four.
Lake County (11-16, 47-48) scored its lone run in the eighth.
Center fielder Michael Gettys and Giron led the 17-hit attack with four knocks each.
The nine-game road trip for the TinCaps continues with the final leg Friday at Bowling Green at 8:05. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
