Plymouth, Mentone Among State Tourney Victors
PIERCETON – A resounding pair of wins opened play at the 2015 Town & Country Senior State Finals Thursday evening at Pierceton Little League.
The 12U baseball tournament, featuring eight teams from around northern Indiana, had two team begin their marches with big wins. Alexandria kicked off the tourney right with a 15-1 victory over North Miami while Plymouth pitched a shutout over Ole Miss, 6-0, in game two of the evening.
Every player in Alexandria’s lineup scored at least one run while North Miami was only able to scrape a run across in its final at-bat. Alexandria move on in the winner’s bracket of the double elimination tournament and will play at 1 p.m. Saturday against the winner of tonight’s New Paris versus Lewis Cass matchup.
Ole Miss managed just three hits as Plymouth’s pitching was dominant. Plymouth pitching struck out 13 in the six-inning gem. The boys from Marshall County scored two in the first inning and plated four more in the third, putting the vice grip on the boys from the river valley. Plymouth marches on to face either Delphi or Flora at 3 p.m. Saturday.
New Paris faces Lewis Cass tonight at 6 p.m. and Flora and Delphi clash at 7:45 p.m. The entirety of the tournament will take place at Pierceton Little League, concluding with the championship game scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday.
Mentone opened its Junior State Finals tournament with a big win, 7-6 in extra innings, over Frankton in extra innings Thursday night. The 10U eight-team tourney, being played in Monticello, will have the Mudhens advancing to face the winner of tonight’s North Miami-Flora winner. In the other half of the bracket, Williamsport defeated Bremen and will face either Plymouth or Oak Hill, which play tonight as well. Bracket play will continue Saturday, with Mentone playing at noon.
The 8U Minor State Finals tournament in Rochester saw Oak Hill and Sheridan both open with matching 15-14 wins, Oak Hill over Rochester and Sheridan over Plymouth.
Oak Hill will get the winner of the Mentone-Frankfort matchup, which is slated for 6 p.m. tonight, and Sheridan will face either North Miami or Russiaville, tonight’s second game in Rochester.
Mentone’s 12U softball Vikings will take on Pioneer Saturday at 11 a.m. in its first game of the Softball State Finals held at Rochester. Winamac and North Miami are on the same side of that bracket, opposite Lewis Cass and New Paris, along with West Central and Alexandria.
