John M. Fetchnik
John M. Fetchik, 64, of Hollywood, Fla., passed away at 9:47 a.m. Sunday, May 17, 2015, at Memorial Hospital Pembroke in Pembroke Pine, Fla. Born Dec. 12, 1950, in Dover, N.J., he was the son of Paul and Helen (Clark) Fetchik.
At a young age, John and his family moved from New Jersey to LaPorte. There he enjoyed playing baseball, football in the back yard with his brother, Paul and neighborhood friends and fishing with his dad. He had fond memories of his mother and her faithfully taking him to church while growing up. On Sept. 24, 1961, he received his first communion at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He attended the local schools, graduating from LaPorte High School with the Class of 1968. Following high school he attended Indiana University in Bloomington.
He had worked for the Indiana Highway Department. On May 19, 1979, John married Trina Wheeler in LaPorte. They had one daughter, Shannon. Toward the end of the 1990’s, he started working for the Carpentry Union, moving down to Florida. John enjoyed traveling and had some of his best trips going to California and Europe. In his recent years, he enjoyed conversations and visits from his daughter and grandchildren. He also regularly attended his community church.
Survivors include his daughter: Shannon (Ray) Slater, Columbia City; mother: Helen Fetchik, West Palm Beach, Fla.; brother: Paul (Pat) Fetchik, LaPorte; and grandchildren: Jacob and Addisyn Slater. He was preceded in death by his father when John was in his late 20’s.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive with Pastor Johnny McCallister officiating.
