Council Discusses Street Repairs, Retail Store
Leesburg will be the site for a new retail business, and seemed to be the focus of the town council’s short meeting Monday evening.
The new business will be a retail store, but the council was unable to provide any further details per the business. Monday afternoon, workers left building materials at the site that sits across from Stacy’s Sports Inn on Main Street. Currently, the site houses recycling bins from KC Recycling, which are in the process of finding a new home.
After a March fuel spill, estimated to be less than 10 gallons on the lot, the town of Leesburg has been working diligently to ensure the soil is safe, especially for the site of the new business. An environmental study has been done of the area, and is expected in the next seven to 10 days.
It is not known who or what caused the fuel spill, but the town is responsible for the clean up and safety of the soil as it leases the land. The lot, on Main Street, often has trucks parked on it, which is most likely the cause of the issue.
Street Commissioner Brandon Queen was pleased to see Doug Jones, board member, pass the initiative to repair the street at the intersection of SR 15 and Church Street. The two-part job will be completed by Phend and Brown and Butt and Timmons companies.
Queen asked the public be reminded to bag leaves left over from last year to be picked up, and to keep grass clippings mowed away from the street.
It was also noted the town will be holding clean-up days June 26 and 27 and dumpsters will be provided. Garage sale days will be held June 19 and 20.
The town will hold a special budget meeting sometime in June, but has not yet set a date.
The next regularly scheduled meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. June 8.
