Warriors Bounce Back On Links
SYRACUSE – The big goal for the Wawasee boys golf team Wednesday night was to reduce the big holes.
Mission accomplished.
The host Warriors bounced back in a big way in defeating Tippecanoe Valley 156-168 in non-conference play at sun-drenched South Shore Golf Course.
Wawasee rebounded after struggling with some big holes on Saturday in shooting 331 to place eighth at their own invitational.
“Our big goal tonight was to reduce our big holes and we did that,” said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. “I was real happy with our effort tonight. This was our best round of the year. If we eliminate the big holes, we can be a good team.”
Jeffrey Moore led the way for the winning Warriors. He fired an even par total of 36 on the back nine layout to earn medalist honors.
Tristen Atwood, who led Wawwaee on Saturday with a round of 77, was right behind with a 37.
“Our top two guys only had one double tonight between them,” noted Coverstone.
The Warriors also had a 41 from Kaleb Perry and a 42 from Cal Heinisch to round out the team score. Maclain Herr shot a 44 and Cameron Adams finished with a 45 in the varsity lineup.
“We knew we would need to play well to beat Valley and our guys did,” Coverstone remarked. “You can’t win with the big holes and we had a lot of them here on Saturday. I’m especially happy with our top four scores tonight. We made an improvement tonight.”
Senior Bryce Zimpelman led the way for the Vikings with a 40. Zimpelman, a regional qualifier in 2014, thought he left a couple of shots on the course due to his drives and his putter.
Trevor Neeley came in with a 41 for Valley. Corey Carson shot a 43 and Jeremy Julian a 44 to cap the team scoring. Kane Stellar shot a 52 and Cole Cumberland had a 54 for the Vikings.
“We shot pretty well tonight and I’m not displeased,” said longtime Valley coach Roger Moriarty, who will retire at season’s end. “I’m satisfied with what the group did as a whole. This is one of our better scores of the year.
“We had four guys in the low 40’s and that’s a good thing. Wawasee is always tough to play against.”
Wawasee won the junior varsity match 223-245. Trevor Haeesig of the Warriors was JV medalist with a 48.
Josh Hicks shot 51 and Dustin Brown and A.J. Galloway each shot 62 for the JV Warriors. Chandler Newsome led the Valley JV with a 54. Bryston Canada shot 59, John Young 64 and Rob Morehouse 68 for the Vikings.
Wawasee, now 9-1 on the season, will take part in the Joe Harris Shootout hosted by Warsaw Thursday at Rozella Ford and then play in the Homestead Invitational on Saturday at the Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne. The Vikings will play Saturday in the LaVille Invitational at the Sprig-O-Mint course near Bremen.
