Dog Chews Recalled For Salmonella Risk To Puppies And Humans
Nylabone Puppy Starter Kit dog chews are being recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination that may affect both pets and their owners.
Dogs who have chewed on the bones are of course at risk. According to the Food and Drug Administration, humans who have touched the chews are also at risk of infection if they did not properly wash their hands after handling and clean any surfaces that may have come in contact with the product.
The recall applies to one lot of the 1.69 ounce package Puppy Starter Kit dog chews, which contain three bone-shaped chews designed for teething puppies. The product, made by New Jersey-based Nylabone Products, was distributed nationwide as well as in Canada.
Symptoms of Salmonella in humans include nausea, diarrhea and vomiting and can lead to more severe ailments in rare cases. Pets with Salmonella may have diarrhea, fever and vomiting and act lethargic.
According to officials, so far no health issues have been reported in connection with the recall. The presence of Salmonella was identified in one lot of the product during routine testing.
The lot number affected by the recall is #21935, UPC 0-18214-81291-3 with an expiration date of 3/22/18 listed on the package.
Consumers who have purchased the product should discontinue use immediately and return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
