YMCA Sharks Wrap Up Winter Season
WARSAW – The YMCA’s Sharks swim team finished out the 2014-2015 season with a fifth-place standing at the YMCA State Championship at Purdue University. The team, which had 70 swimmers ages 5-17, swam 341 individual events with 250 best times and a total of an 18-minute time drop for the team.
Ian Handy placed third in the 6-under age group. Ian Wihebrink was high-point winner in the 9-10 age group, with Cooper Archer placing second in the same age group.
Several kids went to the Age Group Championship in Indianapolis. The state team consisted of Evan Borchers, Nick Zogbi, Grant Knight, Alex Cook, Delaney Wihebrink, Ian Wihebrink and Taylor Gunter. Ian Wihebrink placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke and 11th in the 50 breaststroke.
End of season MVP awards went to Finn Bailey and Kayla Smith for the 8-under age group, to Ian Wihebrink and Marianna Malagon in the 9-10 age group, to Zach LaLonde and Gunter in the 11-12, and Cook and Delaney Wihebrink in the 13-14 age group. Wyatt Stapleton and Molly Kissling earned the MIP award for the 8-under age group, Cooper Archer and Rachel Doyle for the 9-10 age group, Michael Ray and Gracie Scholl for the 11-12 age group and Nick Bazzoni, Maddie Ray, Izzy Ray, Olivia Herman and Audrey Curson for 13-14 age group.
As a member of the Sharks, swimmers will develop their competitive skills, stroke techniques and endurance in a supportive learning environment. Participation builds character, teamwork, and encourages individual achievement. Every Sharks swimmer has the opportunity to compete in meets throughout the season. Swimmers must be at least five years of age, able to swim one length of a 25-yard pool while putting their face in the water, and must be a member of the YMCA.
