Central Indiana To Get New Area Code Beginning Next Year
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has issued an order (Cause No. 44513) to begin use of a new area code in central Indiana.
The order authorizes the communications industry to implement what is called an “all-services distributed overlay” or “area code overlay” to resolve issues with the 317 area code numbering shortage. Without the change, it is predicted the 317 area code would run out of numbers in the second quarter of 2017.
Under the terms of the order, the new area code overlay will go into effect in late spring of 2016. The new area code will be 463 and will be assigned over the same geographic area as the existing 317 area code.
Current customers with a 317 area code will be able to keep their phone numbers and the current area code. Once the new overlay is in effect, customers seeking a new phone number may be assigned a phone number with either the 463 or 317 area code.
The new area code will not change long distance calling. Local calling areas do not change either. Once the area code overlay is in effect, however, 10 digit dialing will be required for all local calls (three digit area code plus seven digit phone number). Customers will continue to dial a “1” in front of the 10 digit phone number for long distance calls.
The area code overlay was the most cost-effective, convenient recommendation for the issue. A customer education plan will be developed to help address questions regarding the new 10 digit dialing requirement.

Southern Indiana experienced a similar transition earlier this year, with the addition of the 930 area code to the region previously covered by the 812 area code. See MANDATORY 10-DIGIT DIALING STARTS SATURDAY.
