Monzelle Williamson
Monzelle Williamson, 97, formerly of Larwill, died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015, at MillerÂ’s at Oak Pointe, Columbia City, where she had been a resident since Feb. 6.
She was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Kimmell, a daughter of Leonard and Bernice (Baker) VanVoorst. Her formative years were spent in Troy Township, Whitley County where she was raised by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John VonVoorst, as her mother died when she was 3 years old. She attended Troy Grade School and graduated from Larwill High School in 1935. She received her Bachelor Degree from Manchester College.
On April 29, 1939, she was united in marriage to Glen A. Williamson. They made their home on a farm south of Larwill for 10 years before moving to their home in Larwill in 1949. Mr. Williamson died January 22, 1990. Monzelle wintered in Florida for 24 years until the Spring 2003.
Mrs. Williamson taught school for 28 years at South Whitley Elementary School, two years at Larwill and a year at Jefferson Center School, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of Larwill United Methodist Church for 63 years and was active of its Womens Society and served as secretary of the church board for a number of years. She was attending Pierceton United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Whitley County and Indiana Retired Teachers Associations, honorary member of the Columbia City Order of the Eastern Star #65 and Past Matron of the Cardinal Chapter O.E.S.
Surviving relatives include a son: Gary (Sue) Williamson, Columbia City; two grandsons: Scott (Becky) Williamson, Anderson; and Mark Williamson, Indianapolis; and a great-grandson: Andrew Wayne Williamson.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Larwill. The visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Larwill Community Center or Pierceton United Methodist Church.
