Wawasee Superintendent Issues Statement On Shooting
Superintendent of Wawasee Community Schools, Dr. Thomas Edington, stated today that he felt many students would be safest at school, regardless of the events this morning.
Because of windchill temperatures that dipped well below freezing, Wawasee Community School Corporation started the day with a delay, but many parents voiced concerns for safety after the shooting in Syracuse.
“We feel the safest course of action is to bring the students in,” said Edington. “We always keep our schools locked during the school day.” Edington also stated a canceled school day would mean many students would be left home alone, as parents still had to be at work. After receiving word of the shooting in Syracuse, the school corporation opted for additional precautions and law enforcement presence at arrival and dismissal.
Edington assured the community there will be law enforcement personnel present at each school during portions of the day.
