South Central Bounces Triton
BOURBON – Friday night’s semi-finals at the Class 1-A Oregon-Davis sectional was the end of the line for the Triton girls basketball team after a 40-34 loss to South Central.
The game saw unique spurts by both clubs, where an even 13-13 first quarter had South Central come back and outscore Triton 15-5 in the second quarter. Triton responded by shutting out South Central in the third quarter, but only scored four points of its own and still trailed, 28-22, heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams scored 12 points in the final frame, but the lack of production from Triton in the second and third quarters were the back breaker.
Neither team took care of the ball, combining to commit 30 turnovers, but South Central made its extra possessions count in scoring 19 points off turnovers to Triton’s six points. The Lady Trojans also struggled from the free throw line, making just 4-13 attempts.
Senior Becca Kennedy led Triton with 14 points while classmate Kylie Mason finished with nine points in the final game of her decorated career. Junior Jaela Meister chipped in nine points and five boards for the Lady Trojans, which end the season 15-8 overall.
Riley Popplewell led everyone with 17 points and 10 boards for the Satellites, which improve to 20-5 overall and will face Oregon-Davis in the sectional championship game Saturday night.
O-DÂ (16-7 overall) continued in its defense of the crown with a 53-40 win over LaCrosse. Alexandria Minix made just four field goals on the night, but went 14-16 from the free throw line to finish with a game-high 24 points to lead the Bobcats. Taylor Kranenburg added 14 points for O-D.
Justene Charlesworth closed out her season with 20 points to lead LaCrosse, which close at 14-9.
South Central and Oregon-Davis will square off at 8 p.m. for the sectional championship. Oregon-Davis has won the last three sectional titles and is still the defending 1-A state champion.
