Whitko Wrestlers Compete In Regional
FORT WAYNE – The Whitko wrestling team saw its season come to an end Saturday in the Carroll Regional.
The six Wildcats who earned berths in the regional round of the state tournament series all lost their first-round matches Saturday to be eliminated.
The top four finishers in each weight class at Carroll advance to the Fort Wayne Snider Semistate next Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. That semi state will include qualifiers from regionals at Carroll, Goshen, Jay County and Peru. The top four finishers in the semi state round earn a berth in the State Finals Feb. 20-21 in Indianapolis.
Evan Cozad had the closest and toughest loss of the first round for the Wildcats. The senior lost a 3-2 decision to Homestead senior Kyle Leland at 145.
Junior Dalton Hile lost a 19-14 decision to Leo senior Eddie Loraine at 120. Junior Erick Lee dropped a 10-2 decision to Fort Wayne Wayne junior Bryson McKee at 160.
Whitko freshman Lane Collier lost in a fall in 0:44 at 113 to Leo sophomore Dane Martin. Senior Tom Werstler lost to Fort Wayne Snider junior Nick Miller by fall in 1:17 at 152. Senior Zach Baughman lost in fall in 3:21 to Fort Wayne Snider senior Russell Davies at 182.
Baughman finishes with an outstanding 30-5 record in his senior season for the Wildcats. Collier finished at 12-11, Hite 10-11, Cozad 27-9, Werstler 24-12 and Lee 17-19.
