Make It Two In A Row For Wawasee
BREMEN – It was a double-header for Wawasee’s boys and girls basketball teams Tuesday night and it could not have gone better for Warrior faithful. After seeing the girls team pull out a win in overtime, the boys team followed suit with a win of its own.
The Warriors picked up their second straight victory by using 10 three pointers to down Bremen 74-51 in the first meeting between the former Northern Lakes Conference foes since December of 2004.
“I thought our play, at times, was really good tonight,” stated Wawasee head coach Steve Wiktorowski. “I also thought that our focus could’ve been better at times. We didn’t focus on the adjustments that we needed to make when Bremen changed things. But, we needed two wins in these past two games and we got them.”
Wawasee scored 62 points in Saturday’s win over Lakeland and the Warriors offense stayed hot for its contest with the Lions. The visitors scored 21 points in the opening quarter, fueled by four three pointers. Gage Reinhard had two of those rainmakers for the Warriors, that was the senior’s warning shot to Bremen.
Reinhard scored five more in the second quarter, including another three. The senior added 10 more in the second half, eight of which came in the third quarter. Reinhard finished his night 9-13 from the field and led all players with 21 points and three steals. The quality effort was not unnoticed by his coach.
“Gage (Reinhard) really stood out to me tonight,” Wiktorowski said of his senior captain. “He really looked like he did before Christmas. He had that confidence and toughness that we need out there.”
Reinhard was one of four Warriors in double digits Tuesday night. Alex Clark had 18 points and led the team with six rebounds and five assists. After those top two players, it was all about the Aarons. Aaron Voirol had 13 points and four rebounds for the Warriors while sophomore Aaron Beer made the most of his first career start by hitting four threes to finish with 12 points.
The most important thing that has come out of the past three games (two wins and a loss) for Wawasee has been the improved offensive production. In the first 12 games of the season Wawasee average just over 49 points per game. Over the past three games, the Warriors have averaged 62 points per game. That can be attributed, in part, to improved chemistry on the court and better play at the point guard position.
The Warriors lost their starting point guard in early January and have just recently started to find a rhythm after trying several different lineups. Hopefully the recent uptick continues as Wawasee looks to snap an ugly 26-game NLC losing streak this weekend.
“We are focusing on getting that NLC win this Saturday against Northridge,” Wiktorowski stated. “Our confidence level is really good right now going into that game. Gage, especially, I think is looking forward to playing Northridge in any sport right now. I know he’ll be ready. We’ll all be ready. Those kids are dying to get that NLC win.”
Wawasee (7-8) will tip at 7:45 p.m. Saturday night against Northridge (8-7). The Warrior junior varsity team will play Bremen Wednesday night.
