Bethel Defeats No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan
MARION – For the first time in program history the Bethel College men’s basketball team defeated a top-ranked school coming in the form of No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan 88-85 Saturday afternoon inside a standing room only Luckey Arena.
An estimated crowd of 3,000 was on hand to watch the two top ten teams face off and the NAIA Game of the Week lived up to the billing as sophomore Clay Yeo connected on a three-pointer with 5.2 seconds left to put Bethel up 86-85.
Indiana Wesleyan (20-2, 8-2) would go the length of the floor, but Chris Mitchell would come up with a big block on IWU’s Johnny Marlin that fell into the hands of Matt Schauss who was immediately fouled and closed the contest out with two free throws and the victory.
For the game the Pilots shot 52 percent from the field (33-of-63) including 10-of-24 from beyond the arc (42 percent).
Matt Schauss paved the way for Bethel (19-3, 7-3) with 30 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Three other Pilots reached double-figures with Yeo adding 19 points. Freshman Chris Mitchell came off the bench to add 13 and Ryan Wassink 10.
Zach Miller chipped in nine points while Gage Ott finished with five.
Additionally, Bethel moves to 14-0 on the road while handing IWU their first home loss of the season. The Pilots were the last team to defeat the Wildcats a season ago in the Crossroads League tournament semi-final during the 2013-2014 campaign.
