Verizon Phishing SCAM hitting locally
Last evening several customers of Verizon Wireless received a call from (800) 922-012. If answered, a voice on the other end says there is a credit of $55.00 on the account, and the customer should go to “verizon55.com” to get a credit on next month’s billing.
Verizon55.com is not the official website of Verizon Wireless. Although, the website looks very similar to the official Verizon site, there are differences like pixelated images that should alert customers to the scam. (see image below)
A WHOIS lookup of verizon55.com reveals the owner’s name to be “Juan Matos”. The domain was registered on December 30, 2014.
DO NOT put any personal information into form fields on verizon55.com! This is a scam website designed to get people to enter their username and password, at which time personal information is compromised.
If you have received this call, and wish to verify its authenticity, call the official Verizon Wireless (Cellco Partnership) hotline at: 1 (800) 922-0204 or visit the official website at www.verizonwireless.com
Verizon has a web page to help customers spot common types of scams. Visit: https://www.verizon.com/pages/securityalerts/ for more information.
This scam is almost identical to a scam that took place in February, 2104 called Verizon54.com.
