Parks Board Continues To Improve Area
At the monthly Syracuse Parks board meeting Monday, members continued to discuss progress at the athletic complex, community center and reported upcoming holiday events.
Parks superintendent Chad Jonsson reported the work on the ice rink has begun at the Harold Schrock Athletic Complex. Equipment has arrived and setup for the rink is underway. In regards to Lakeside Park, Jonsson continues to work with an area business to explore designs for a potential pavilion.
Syracuse Community Center’s newly remodeled fitness room has had a noticeable increase in usage since re-opening in October. More people are using the new equipment, with daily totals comparable to monthly usage prior to the expansion. The supervisor announced there will be an official open house Dec. 1.
Other community center events were reported by program director Tyler McLead. McLead announced registration for adult basketball leagues began Nov. 3 and will continue to Jan. 2. Roster forms and league rules along with registration information is available on the park’s website.
Syracuse Holiday Magic will kick-off the season Saturday, Nov. 22. Families can make a gingerbread house between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Lakeland Youth Center. Sleigh rides will also be available from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The price is $1 per person or $5 per family.
From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. the fun moves to Crosson Mill where there will be entertainment, reindeer and the lighting of the Christmas tree.
Upcoming children’s programs at the community center include Santa letters and breakfast with Santa. A special mailbox will be located in the lobby at Syracuse Community Center Nov. 17 to Dec. 6 where children can drop off their letter. Santa will pick up the mail during breakfast with Santa 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. The cost is $3 for adults and children are admitted free. There will be a variety of activities including photos, crafts and cookies.
McLead concluded with the Syracuse museum presentation, Kevin Stonerock’s living history of “Billy Yank, Common Soldier of the Union,” at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Prior to adjournment of the meeting, Jonsson, briefly reminded park board members have terms scheduled to expire at the end of the year.
