Durand Willis, 22, 404 N. Parker St., Warsaw, was arrested Monday and charged with burglary of a dwelling, theft, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
His charges stem from stealing a 32-inch Vizio television from the apartment of his friend and neighbor, John A. Mayer. Mayer passed away on Thursday, Nov. 6.
Warsaw Police Department Lt. Kip Shuter reported on Sunday, a neighbor and friend of Mayer’s had noticed a window screen had been cut at Mayer’s residence. The neighbor contacted Mayer’s family to see if they had recently been to the apartment as they were removing items.
At approximately 12:05 p.m. on Monday, the same individual went to Willis’ apartment and saw Mayer’s television inside the apartment. Police were notified.
Willis was reportedly also a friend of the deceased.
While police were obtaining information from one neighbor, Willis was observed with another individual walking from behind a dumpster. Police questioned Willis about the television. He replied he did not know anything and was not telling the officers anything.
At this time Willis and the other individual began getting into an argument and when told by police to quiet down, Willis continued yelling.
The television was recovered.
Willis is being held on a $6,000 surety bond.
