Local Special Olympians Compete In Indianapolis
Nearly 1,500 Special Olympics athletes from across Indiana competed in the fourth annual Eunice Kennedy Shriver Games at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.
Kosciusko County Special Olympic athletes competed in flag football and corn toss events at the EKS Games on Saturday, Sept. 13 and Sunday, Sept. 14. Lunch was provided at this day long competition along with musical entertainment.
The flag football team coached by Dave Miller won their first two preliminary placement games in the morning but lost both hard fought afternoon divisional games earning a fourth place finish.
The flag football team members included Matt Bammel, Matt Baker, Gabe Santana, Amy Philson, Tony Thompson, Anthony DeGaetano, Scott Frush,, Kevin McPeak, Aaron Hobbs and Cedrick Tinker.
Ken McPeak, head coach for corn toss did an excellent job preparing the athletes for the competition.
The Kim Holloway/ Shannon Middaugh team won the silver medal in their respective division.
The following corn toss teams won the bronze medal in their respective division:
Gale Vanator and Josie Wood; James Mornout and Jordan Bollhoeffer; and Norm McPeak and JD Miller
The following corn toss teams placed fourth in their respective division:
Mary Kay Bess and Sandy Bibler; Ruby French and Jerry Davis; Sandy Hunter and Michelle Brubaker; Robert Svinarich and Jim Kussmaul.
In the Corn Toss Unified Competition (Athlete & Coach), fourth place finishes for the following teams:
Liz Wabol and Becky Walls; Wayne Momeyer and John Bonitati
County coordinator, Becky Walls express appreciation to the volunteers and coaches for their efforts in making this possible for the local Special Olympic athletes. Special Olympics league bowling is currently underway with team basketball and skills basketball beginning late fall.
