UPDATE: Elkhart Officers Involved In Fatal Shooting
UPDATE: The Indiana State Police are continuing their investigation into the Elkhart City Police shooting Tuesday evening in which Joseph Adam Lee, 32, was killed.
State police detectives are conducting interviews and processing evidence that was collected at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted by officials on Thursday.
State police detectives are working closely with the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office. A determination has been made that no other information related to the facts surrounding the shooting will be discussed or released at this time.
The names of the seven officers involved in the shooting will be released over the next 24 hours by the Elkhart City Police Department. As a point of clarification seven Elkhart City Police officers are on administrative leave for their involvement in the shooting. Three additional officers are continuing their normal work schedule but are being interviewed as witnesses to the incident.
At the request of the Elkhart City Police Department the Indiana State Police are investigating a shooting that involved officers last night in Elkhart City. As part of the department’s protocol an outside agency was called in to complete the investigation.
Shortly before 8:30 p.m. this evening Elkhart City Police officers were in the area of 403 Chapman attempting to locate a subject wanted on a felony warrant. Upon arriving a foot pursuit ensued between officers and a white male subject. Elkhart City officers chased the subject westbound on foot from the apartment through the complex for nearly one block. The subject was shot by police after the man pointed a gun at the officers.
No officers were injured in the shooting. However, the suspect died as a result of the police gunfire. The subject has been positively identified by family members on scene through photographs. However, his name will not be released until immediate members of his family are contacted.
State police detectives are currently on scene interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
The names of the officers involved in the shooting will be released over the next 48 hours by the Elkhart City Police Department.
