Warsaw Claims Tourney Titles
MICHIGAN CITY – The Warsaw volleyball team put on a championship performance Saturday.
The Tigers posted a 3-1 mark to claim the title of the Michigan City Invitational.
Warsaw defeated Class 3-A No. 2 Fort Wayne Concordia and Class 4-A No. 17 Valparaiso in pool play. The Tigers also lost to conference foe Concord in pool play, but still earned a spot in the title tilt.
The Tigers defeated fellow Northern Lakes Conference foe Plymouth in the championship match. Coach Mike Howard’s team had just picked up a 3-0 conference win at Plymouth on Thursday night.
Katie Voelz continued her stellar senior season in leading the champions. Voelz earned Tournament MVP honors on the day.
The Tigers also had junior Jordyn Lindeman and sophomore setter Cassie Hoag named to the all-tournament team.
Warsaw improves to 16-4 on the season. The Tigers, who lead the conference with a perfect 4-0 mark, will play at NLC opponent Wawasee on Thursday.
The Warsaw junior varsity team went 3-0 Saturday to win its own invitational championship.
The JV Tigers defeated South Bend Adams 25-11, 25-7, Elkhart Memorial 25-21, 25-18 and Rochester 25-17, 25-12.
Kenzie Welk led the way for the champions with 22 kills to go with 23 digs, three aces and a block.
Raina Armey led the defense with 30 digs and also had seven aces. Alicia Sikora had 12 digs, 42 assists and a block. Abby Serbousek had nine digs, eight kills, 10 assists, one block and four aces. Hanna Leach had seven kills and two blocks and Lucy Fahler had five kills, two blocks and seven aces.
Coach Chandra Hepler’s JV team is now 13-2 on the season. The JV Tigers play at Wawasee Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in NLC action.
