Wawasee Sports Wrap – Sept. 20
It took 60 minutes for someone to find the net, and 80 still didn’t solve much in a 1-1 tie Saturday between Wawasee and East Noble in varsity boys soccer.
Wawasee hit the scoreboard first, with Austin Shrack taking a pass from Ricky Camargo in the 60th minute and finding the back of the net for Shrack’s third goal of the season.
East Noble would counter in the 70th minute off a free kick to knot the score at one, where it would stay the final 10 minutes.
Wawasee moves its record to 4-3-4 this season while East Noble settles in at 4-7-1.
The Warriors will play again Tuesday in a key Northern Lakes Conference match at Goshen.
JV Shuts Out NorthWood
A big game from Noah Watkins, who rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns was what Wawasee needed in a 14-0 win Saturday morning against NorthWood in JV football in Nappanee.
Kolin Bell added 39 rushing yards for the Warrior ground attack while Jeff Bartman and Paul Mendoza combined for 14 tackles and three sacks.
“Great game from the offensive line,” began Wawasee JV coach Brent Berkeypile. “It is a great feeling to be able to run the ball like that against a quality opponent like NorthWood.”
Wawasee (3-1-1) will host Plymouth next Saturday.
Wawasee Competitive At JV NLC, Merrillville
Wawasee did not fare well in the team standings at the NLC JV Tennis Invite, landing tied with Memorial for seventh overall with four points. But Wawasee did have Dylan Staley place fourth overall at three singles to highlight its day.
Wawasee’s varsity had three courts earn wins at the Merrillville Invite, led by Todd Hauser’s fourth-place finish in the one singles bracket. Cal Heinisch was fifth at three singles and the duo of Jake Hutchinson and Nate Haines were sixth in the one doubles bracket.
The JV and varsity teams will play in its final regular season match Monday when NorthWood comes to town. The varsity will begin its postseason Wednesday with the first day of the Northern Lakes Conference tournament. The Warsaw Boys Tennis Sectional begins Oct. 1 at Warsaw Community High School.
