Fisher Feeling Fine Back On Court
BOURBON – It’s easy to see that Jared Fisher is happy to be on the tennis court this fall.
Spend a few minutes talking to the Triton senior and it’s even easier to understand why.
Fisher is rounding back into playing form some eight months after having surgery to fix his breast bone.
“I feel a lot better now,” said Fisher after a recent practice. “My breathing is better and I’m not having any pain with my chest and my fitness level is almost back to where it was at.”
Fisher said that his breast bone has always been sunken in. It was near the end of last tennis season however that he had some pain. A trip to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis revealed that that surgery was needed for the condition.
“I was pretty shocked that it was that bad and I wasn’t expecting that,” said Fisher of the diagnosis.
Fisher had a 3 1/2 hour surgery in December at Riley in which they had to cut open his chest. The procedure also included having to break his sternum and some of his ribs to fix the situation, which had affected his heart.
Fisher, who will play No. 1 singles for the Trojans this fall, then had a recovery process for 4-5 months which basically limited him to doing almost nothing.
“I really did nothing during the recovery and did not play tennis until June,” said Fisher, who now has about an eight-inch scar from the surgery.
“I’m glad that I had the surgery now instead of waiting longer. The recovery is a lot worse for an adult than it was for someone my age.”
Fisher helped coach Al Peckham’s team go 11-6 a year ago as he played No. 2 singles.
“It’s going to be different playing No. 1 this season, but I just go out and do my best and have fun with it,” said Fisher. “I just enjoy playing. It’s a fun game and a good sport that you can play your whole life. We also have a lot of fun together as a team.”
Peckham likes what he has seen from Fisher in the preseason.
“He looks like he’s not missed a beat to me,” said Peckham. “He’s my top guy this season and I expect him to handle playing No. 1 well for us.”
Triton will open the season at Rochester On Aug. 21.
