A specialized wheelchair will make a hiking trail at Chain O’Lakes State Park more accessible, thanks to the organizers of the Indiana Trail 100 race.

The Indiana Trail 100 is a 100-mile trail race held each April at the park in Albion. All net proceeds benefit the park, and race organizers recently donated to Chain O’Lakes an all-terrain power wheelchair to be used on Trail 3.

Trail 3 features rolling woods, a creek with an accessible bridge and a beaver dam.

The wheelchair is joystick-operated and equipped with a seat belt, and arm and leg rests. The chair easily rolls across sand and up challenging grades.

Other park trails are being enhanced to enable the safe use of the chair in the future.

“While we recognize that we’ll never be able to make all trails accessible to people with mobility disabilities, we are working hard to remove as many barriers as possible,” said property manager Sam Boggs.

Indiana Trail 100 purchased the wheelchair from Innovation in Motion, a family-owned business in Angola. The wheelchair is available for free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the nature center. A valid state ID is required.
