Legion Planning Memorial Benefit Weekend
A big weekend is being planned by the North Webster American Legion Post 253 to raise funds for Kosciusko Cancer Care Fund in the memory of Kay Kyler.
Kyler was a long-time, active member of the North Webster American Legion Auxiliary Unit 253 and was the wife of former Legion commander Harry Kyler. She passed away last year after an extended battle with cancer. All proceeds from the 3-day event will be going to the KCCF.
After her death, Harry fulfilled one of his wife’s wishes by arranging for a cruise on the Dixie sternwheel paddle boat that tours Webster Lake. Family and friends joined in to fill the Dixie and form a flotilla of boats that went around the lake in her memory. The funds raised were contributed to KCCF.
This weekend’s event covers three days, Friday through Sunday, July 11-13, and the legion and its affiliated organizations are helping out in full force. That is many people because the North Webster American Legion is the second biggest in the state with more than 3,000 members.
Friday evening there will be a bake sale and musical entertainment at the legion by the band Gun Slinger.
Saturday will feature an array of events all at the American Legion, 756 S. SR 13. A breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. along with the bake sale. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is a car and motorcycle cruise-in with prizes being awarded. At the same time, a poker walk will be held.
A corn hole contest on Saturday begins at 1 p.m. and a musical jam commences at 2 p.m. and continues with three different bands until 11 p.m. Bring your own seating to the American Legion Pavilion for the musical jam.
The Dixie cruise and boat flotilla begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with entertainment provided by Capt. Bob, the singing Dixie skipper. Tickets are $20 each or $35 per couple and are available at the American Legion and are going quickly. When the Dixie returns to North Webster Town Park at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Russ Chandler will perform for an hour and a half. Bring your own seating.
