The Doglegs Of Summer: Parmore Golf Course [VIDEO]
This feature is the eighth installment of a series of reviews for golf courses in the Kosciusko County area
NEW PARIS – Nine holes, miniature golf, a driving range and an ice cream shop highlight the amenities of one of the most enjoyable golf courses in the Kosciusko County area.
Parmore Golf Course is a small, par-three layout measuring between 1,328 and 1,418 yards, depending on the tee. If you were a fan of Al Czervik, Rodney Dangerfield’s character in the classic golf comedy Caddyshack, then a trip up State Road 15 to neighboring New Paris in Elkhart County should be in your near future.
Czervik never took himself too seriously and was always up for some fun on the course. Parmore prides itself on its fun factor and is an easy course for new golfers to get a feel for the game, but also is a fun change of pace for the everyday player, as well.
The course features seven par-three holes and two par-four layouts. There are just a few obstacles to avoid, making for a more relaxing round. If players are not up for nine, the driving range is always a nice way to get a golf fix and there is also the option of 18-holes of mini golf.
Jeremiah King is experiencing his first summer as owner of the course and he is already feeling great about the way the course is being received by customers.
“I wish you could’ve seen the course before I took it over,” said King. “The greens were not in the best of shape, there was just places on the courses where it was all dirt, no grass. I did a lot of work after we took over last fall and things have really filled in nicely this year, so far.”
King recently held a “Free Golf Day” promotion to drum up interest in the course which provided him with several new memberships. King has been able to draw people in with promotions on the course, but a lot of visitors are stopping by for the course’s other big draw, Dips & Dogs.
Dips & Dogs is the restaurant on the other side of the pro shop and serves great lunch and dinner items as well as a selection of over 24 ice cream flavors.
King is excited to promote a glow golf outing, which will be held Saturday, July 12. Those interested are asked to contact the course at the number provided below.
Day Played: July 1, 2014 in hot and sunny conditions. Mike and Nick took a whirl on everything.
Best Hole: We found that the easiest hole on our quest to “par more” was the par-three fifth hole. While the course does not feature many hazards from start to finish, the fifth hole is about as simple as it gets. There is no water, intrusive trees or any other natural hazards that can really affect the play, assuming the ball is hit straight. Mike managed to have a nice drive and would par the hole, Nick chose to wave right with his drive and would eventually settle for a five.
For the record, this was our first round of a sub-40, with Mike shooting a 34 on the par-29 course while Nick carded his first 40 of the tour with a 45. SUCCESS!
Worst Hole: We want to point out that on a course this small and fun, it’s hard to label one of the holes as the “worst.” But, we like to stick with our format. Both Mike and Nick took a five with a three-putt on number three. The hole makes you play more to the left as the driving range sits to the right, and the railroad track runs behind the hole, forcing golfers to play in front of the pin.
Major Hazards: Again, there just are not that many hazards on the course. Golfers need to acknowledge the pond/marsh area located at the center of the course, the greens for holes two, four and eight all back right up against it. The ninth hole provides a small dogleg to the left, tempting golfers to hit under some large trees. Tall grass beyond the second cut can also swallow up balls.
Miniature Mayhem: We could not turn down the chance to play a quick round of miniature golf. If you haven’t already, check out the video above to see just how much fun can be had on Parmore’s mini course. We highlighted hole 11, which challenges players to ramp their putt over a small moat, my first attempt did not go so well. The course provides several other challenging putt-tastic holes that you just have to experience for yourself. For those who are curious, Mike shot a 40 on the par-39 mini course, Nick had a 48. Surprise, surprise.
