NWS Confirms Tornado Hit Near Milford
The National Weather Service has confirmed today that Monday night’s severe storms produced two tornadoes, one of which struck near Milford with high winds and additional damages affecting Syracuse.
According to the NWS, the EF-0 tornado struck at 1:06 a.m. and was approximately 50 yards wide and traveled 1.9 miles hitting just west of Milford.
The tornado produced 80 mph winds that primarily resulted in microbursts which caused damages to the Wawasee High School athletic complex and surrounding points, including Boston and Brooklyn streets, where trees were uprooted and downed limbs damaged several homes.
The initial touchdown was just south of CR 1250 North and East of CR 400 West where a large metal frame farm building was destroyed. The NWS determined the tornado then crossed CR 1250 North, traveled through a corn field and then destroyed a barn near CR 200 West, resulting in missile debris that scattered to another field east of CR 200 West.
The second tornado that was spawned from the storm hit at 1:36 a.m. in LaGrange County. The NWS declared that an EF-1 that produced 95 mph winds and traveled a path 50 yards wide for 1 mile.
The tornado touched down just west of LaGrange on U.S. 20 where it uprooted trees and caused minor structural damage to homes.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported from either tornado, however, a Winona Lake teen was killed when a tree fell on his family’s mobile home during the storm that hit Winona Lake. (See related)
