Support For WLCA Weed Control Tabled
North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Chamber of Commerce was asked to support the Webster Lake Conservation Association in an effort to persuade the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to allow more spraying for invasive, non-native weeds such as Eurasian watermilfoil.
Weeds have been an major complaint for boaters and recreational users of the lake this season. WLCA wants to try to balance the use of the lake by fisherman with that of recreational users but needs cooperation from the DNR. The request was made at the chamber general membership meeting Monday at the North Webster American Legion.
Dr. Terry Frederick spoke about the history of weed treatment during the last four years and the growing reluctance of the DNR to permit milfoil treatment in both Webster and Backwater lakes. The decision to support was tabled until more information is available on what is being used to treat the weeds.
It was announced by chamber president Sue Ward boaters have to be 200 feet from shore when anchoring boats in front of the shoreline on state-owned public lakes.
The press release stated, “On May 21, 2014, the Indiana Natural Resources Commission issued an order which determined that under the prevailing statute, IC 14-15-3-17, the only motorboat operations which are permitted within 200 feet of the shoreline are trolling or approaching or leaving a dock. As a result, it has now been affirmatively determined that all other boating activities within 200 feet of the shoreline, including anchoring, are a violation of Indiana statute.”
The membership voted to renew the board and officers no-fault insurance policy. The increase was just $5.
The deadline for sponsors to have company names on Dixie Day T-shirts is Friday. The average sponsorship is in the hundreds of dollars but lesser amounts are also welcome. Contact Ward at Sue’s Creations.

The flower watering cart used by the chamber to carry water for the downtown flowers is in bad shape. Either it will be replaced or repaired depending on cost estimates. The chamber has high school students water the flowers each summer.
Ideas are being sought for a special attraction for the chamber-sponsored Fall Festival Saturday, Sept. 27. Last year’s lumberjack show proved popular and another type of family entertainment is wanted for this year.
The Cake Lady has been chosen as the June Business of the Month by the chamber while ribbon cuttings have been held for Double D Upholstery and junk in your truck and Tangibles, all new businesses in North Webster.
The chamber continues to be in contact with WNIT regarding events in the area. The chamber board and others met with WNIT President Greg Giczi in March and want to continue the relationship with the public broadcast station.
The next general meeting of the chamber will be noon Monday, July 7, at the North Webster American Legion, 756 S. SR 13.
