Wawasee Splits Final Home Match
SYRACUSE – Just two nights after claiming a big Northern Lakes Conference victory, the Wawasee golf team was back at it on Thursday night.
The Warriors played host to Northridge and Goshen at South Shore Golf Club in the team’s only home conference match of the season. At the the end of the evening, results were mixed for Wawasee, poor for Goshen and stellar for Northridge. The Raiders shot a 155 as a team, besting Wawasee (162) and Goshen (175).
There was not too much to boast about from Wawasee’s point of view, but Jeffrey Moore did give the Warriors the match’s best performance.
Moore shot a 34, four lower than the next closest score. The sophomore stayed hot throughout his match, not being phased by the windy and miserable 40-degree weather. Moore parred six of the nine holes, picked up a birdie on four and highlighted his day with an eagle on six.
Being the final home contest of the season, Thursday’s match was one that would normally be dubbed “Senior Night”, but was instead called “Foreigner Night” to better fit the situation. No, the name had nothing to do with 1980s music, but rather a fun tribute to the team’s lone senior, Rasmus Rich, a foreign exchange student from Denmark.
Rich had a serviceable night for his final round at South Shore, shooting a 44. Rich highlighted his final home match with birdies on holes four and six.
Tristen Atwood golfed the one spot for Wawasee and shot a 41. Cal Heinisch signed for a 43 at the No. 3 spot while Mason Germonprez finished with a 46 in the four spot for the Warriors.
Northridge benefitted from an all-around team performance, having three of its five golfers shoot in the 30s.
Will Erekson and Tom Morrison led the Raiders as both shot a 38. Luke Morrison shot a 39 in the three slot for Northridge, Austen Schmidt shot a 40 while Corbin Bullock finished with a 43.
Goshen struggled to find its niche on the course as Quinn Albin and Joel Moyer tied as the Redskins low score, both shooting a 42. Michael Chupp (46), Alex Hartsough (45) and Matt Stevens (51) rounded out the scores for the Redskins.
Wawasee picked up a solid win on Tuesday night at Stonehenge Country Club against rival Warsaw, but failed to take care of business at home against Northridge. The inconsistency has become an unfortunate pattern for head coach Steve Coverstone’s team.
“We just didn’t finish,” said Coverstone. “The whole team was playing good, but the last three or four holes we just played bad. We couldn’t finish and that’s what the difference in the match was.
“It’s not like out kids didn’t try, they try every shot. I don’t really have an answer as to why we didn’t finish strong. I think it’s one of those things where we just aren’t a consistent team yet.”
Wawasee (10-2, 2-1) will try to find some consistency as it travels to Mystic Hills Golf Club this weekend for the Culver Military Academy Invite with play starting a 9 a.m. The Warriors will continue NLC play next Wednesday against NorthWood and Plymouth at McCormick Creek Golf Course in Nappanee.
The junior varsity Warriors managed to pull the sweep against its NLC counterparts. Wawasee shot a 177 to best Northridge (182) and Goshen (200). Brandon Buss was the low man for the JV Warriors, shooting a 42. Dominik Sanderson also turned in a solid score for Wawasee with a 43.
