Three’s No Company For Wawasee
SYRACUSE – The conditions were far from ideal at South Shore Golf Course on Monday night but that did not stop the Wawasee boys golf team from playing its first home match of the season.
The Warriors braved the cold and wind and showed that it will take a lot more than gloomy weather to throw them off their game in 2014. Wawasee picked up three wins and remained undefeated in match play by shooting a 167 to defeat Fairfield (174), Elkhart Central (190) and West Noble (194).
“The weather made tonight’s match very tough for everyone,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “When it’s windy, that’s one thing. When it’s cold, that’s one thing. When it’s cold and windy, that makes it really hard.”
There were times where Wawasee certainly looked uncomfortable out on the course. Some players started out bundled up and quickly found jackets or sweatshirts to be too restricting and made a change, others threw on a jacket to cover up from the vicious wind. Then there were some, like Wawasee’s Cal Heinisch who simply wore shorts into the 50-degree weather and never flinched.
One player that found himself searching for changes after his opening hole was Warrior sophomore Jeffrey Moore.
Moore started his day with a double bogie on hole two. After collecting himself and making a small adjustment to his attire, Moore was back in business picking up par on holes three four and five. The sophomore was putting for eagle on six before settling for a birdie then produced his highlight of the day on seven.
The par-three seventh provided difficulty all day for players of every team. only one managed to walk away with a birdie, that was Moore. He hit a 36-foot putt to bring him to even par for the round. Moore recorded a bogie on eight and one while coming out even on nine to finish with a 38, the lowest score on the day for Wawasee.
Moore’s score was bested only by Central’s Riley Keagle. Keagle shot a 37, picking up birdies on four and six. Tim Dice recorded the top score for West Noble with a 44 while Fairfield’s Dustin Layne topped his team with a 40. The Falcon’s No. 1 golfer, John Stack, had an off night but still turned in a 42.
Wawasee’s top golfer, Tristen Atwood, also had a tough time on Monday. Atwood turned in a 45 for the Warriors. Atwood’s game struggled mightily on hole three. The junior teed off three times on the hole after watching the first two drives get carried out of bounds by the fierce wind. Stack also struggled, teeing off twice on the hole.
Heinisch signed for the team’s second-lowest score at 42. The sophomore highlighted his day with a birdie on two. Mason Germonprez birdied hole four and turned in a 43 for the Warriors while Rasmus Rich finished with a 44 to round out Wawasee’s varsity five.
Coverstone saw room for improvement in his team on he greens, but was happy to get the three victories, especially the one over Fairfield who beat Wawasee in last year’s sectional.
“Any time that we can beat Fairfield, we feel good,” Coverstone said. “We just have to focus on our short game right now if we want to keep beating good teams, we miss too many short putts.”
Wawasee (4-0) will host Manchester, Riley and Whitko on Thursday evening at South Shore.
Wawasee split the junior varsity match. Dominik Sanderson led the JV Warriors with a 45 but Wawasee’s 198 was ultimately bested by Fairfield’s 192. Both teams defeated Elkhart Central’s 257, West Noble did not have enough JV golfers to have a team score.
