Staples Scraps Plan To Move Store
When Meijer opened its new store in Warsaw last summer, Warsaw City Planner Jeremy Skinner said Staples submitted a development plan to occupy space on the southwest quadrant of the retail giant’s property (identified as Outlot D in the accompanying photo).
Last May Skinner said, “They haven’t applied for the building permit yet, but their plan is to move dirt this summer.” That, however, never happened and it now appears Staples has scrapped its plan to relocate from the Big R plaza on the east side of Warsaw.
Staples announced plans last week to close 225 stores in North America by the end of next year. As much as 12 percent of the chain stores in the United States are being closed as the company says online competition has hurt their sales.
Contacts to Staples media representatives have gone unanswered, but the company has announced it would not elaborate on the number of jobs being cut or the locations of stores that will close. A store manager at the local Staples refused to comment, directing our inquiry to the corporate office.
