Reported Shooting At Purdue West Lafayette
One person is in police custody after a reported shooting at Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus that took one man’s life.
During a press conference held by Provost Tim Sands at the university at 2:30 p.m., the school confirmed the death of one male victim. According to the school’s newspaper, the incident remains under investigation. Details surrounding the suspect and victim, including their identities, has yet to be released, except for the fact that both are male.
The suspect is reportedly being detained at the Purdue University Police headquarters. The school paper states, according to Purdue Police Chief John Cox, it is not believed that the shooter had intentions to harm anyone outside of the one male victim.
“This doesn’t appear to be what you would typically have as an active shooter on a campus,” Cox said. “This individual seemed to have had intentions for the decedent. He took the action that the individual took, then he turned around and left the building and was taken into custody outside of the Electrical Engineering Building moments after by a West Lafayette city police officer that was ready to assist.”
According to the school, police have cleared the electrical engineering building at the school and there is no ongoing threat to campus.
The shelter in place directive for the university campus was lifted shortly after 1:15 p.m. today. Though police have cleared the electrical engineering building, the university reports the building will remain closed at this time.
The campus was put on shelter in place notice after a shooting was reported in the electrical engineering building around noon. The university asks that those seeking up-to-date information about campus safety visit their security website HERE.
