Prep Cagers Chasing League Titles
The high school girls basketball season has hit the homestretch.
With postseason play looming just three weeks away, the battle for bragging rights in conference play has heated up too.
The Northern Lakes Conference title is really up for grabs with just three league games left for each squad.
The trio of NorthWood, Northridge and Plymouth sit atop the NLC standings at 3-1. The Raiders threw the race into a wide open affair by beating the Panthers 41-23 Saturday night in Middlebury. The loss ended a 10-game winning streak for coach Steve Neff’s NorthWood team.
Warsaw, the defending champs in the NLC, kept its hopes alive with a 44-34 NLC win at Goshen Saturday night. The Tigers, who host Class 4-A No. 5 Penn Wednesday night in a non-conference affair, are 2-2 in league play.
The Tigers, who have won five of their last six games to raise their overall record to 7-8, do have one big advantage in that their final three NLC games are all at home. Warsaw hosts Concord (Jan. 25), Elkhart Memorial (Jan. 28) and NorthWood (Feb. 1) to conclude conference action.
Elkhart Memorial is also 2-2 in NLC action after defeating Wawasee 54-30 Saturday. The trio of Goshen, Wawasee and Concord are all 1-3 in league play.
Whitko, in the midst of its best season in years, is in the middle of the race for a Three Rivers Conference title. The Wildcats improved to 4-1 in league play Saturday night with a 61-51 TRC win over Southwood.
The Wildcats, who have won four of their last five games to improve to 10-5 overall, are second in the league standings. Wabash leads the TRC at 3-0, followed by Whitko (4-1), Rochester (3-1) and Northfield (2-1).
Whitko still has TRC games versus Northfield (Jan. 25) and then at Wabash (Feb. 1).
Tippecanoe Valley dropped to 2-2 in league play after a 63-53 loss to Rochester Saturday. The Vikings are currently fifth in the league standings, followed by Southwood (1-3), North Miami (1-3) and Manchester (0-5).
John Glenn has already clinched at least a share of the Northern State Conference crown. The Falcons, who are 12-1 overall, are 5-0 in league play. Triton, which has won the last two NSC championships, is tied for second with Culver at 3-2. Knox is 2-2 in the NSC, followed by LaVille (2-3), New Prairie (2-3), Bremen (1-3) and Jimtown (1-4).
Sectional play is scheduled to begin Feb. 11. The drawing for state tournament pairings is slated for Sunday, Feb. 2 at 4 p.m.
