Coon Second In Mideast Championships
Ellis Coon continued to showcase his skills on the cross country circuit in a big way on Saturday.
The Warsaw senior finished in second place in the 27th annual Mideast Cross Country Championships held in Kettering, Ohio.
Coon, who was third overall at the State Finals on Nov. 2 in Terre Haute, covered the course in 15:51 Saturday for the Indiana All-Star squad.
Garret Chrichlow of Twinsburg, Ohio took top honors in the boys’ race with a winning effort of 15:45.
Coon, who has committed to run at Temple next year, won sectional, regional and semi state titles this fall for coach Jim Mills’ Warsaw team. He then led the Tigers to a 12th place finish at the State Finals two weeks ago.
Ohio won the boys’ team title with a score of 39. Illinois was second with a score of 45 with Indiana third with a 53 and Michigan fourth with a 77.
Anthony Didion of LaPorte placed ninth overall in a time of 16:07. Blake O’Dell of Northridge was 25th in 16:27 and Andy Timmons of South Bend Adams was 34th in 16:35.
The Indiana girls’ team captured the championship by placing four runners in the top nine. Elena Lancioni of LaPorte led the champions with a fifth place finish in a time of 18:41.
Indiana posted a team score of 45 to tie Michigan, but won the title on their sixth place runner’s finish. Ohio scored 57 and Illinois 63.
Rachel Thompson of New Prairie was 31st in the girls’ race in a time of 19:37.
