No. 2 Tigers Take Soccer Opener
FORT WAYNE – The Warsaw boys soccer team made its season debut by posting a 3-1 victory over host Fort Wayne Concordia Tuesday night.
Sam Allbritten, one of the key returnees from last year’s state runner-up team, led the way Tuesday. Allbritten tallied a goal and added an assist in the win.
The pair of Stephen Kolbe and Miguel Rivera, two more key players back from last season’s outstanding team, each had a goal in the victory. Matt Williams had an assist for the Tigers.
The Tigers, who are ranked No. 2 in Class 2-A, have been to the Final Four each of the last three seasons. Coach Scott Bauer’s team was state runner-up in 2012, losing 1-0 to Columbus North in the title game. North is currently ranked No. 1 in the state.
Warsaw, which graduated eight seniors including its top two scorers in Nate Kolbe and Diego Lopez from last year’s squad, made it a clean sweep Tuesday night by notching a 3-0 win in the junior varsity contest.
Warsaw plays in the Fort Wayne Snider Invitational Friday and at Fort Wayne Northrop Aug. 27. The Tigers’ home opener will be versus Northern Lakes Conference foe Plymouth on Aug. 29.
