Grace Seminary graduate, Chaplain Billy Graham, who is also a Major in the U.S. Army, surprised his daughter, Katherine Graham, during Grace College’s 2013 Commencement ceremony Saturday morning.

Katherine, who graduated with a degree in English education, did not expect the surprise visit by her father. Maj. Graham had returned home to the United States after a tour in Afghanistan where he served as a chaplain with the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade. His return for Katherine’s graduation was a total surprise to his daughter.

Scott Shaffer is the Veterans Affairs professional for Grace College Student Veteran Organization, worked with Maj. Graham to arrangement for the surprise. As Katherine Graham’s name was read and she walked across the stage to receive her degree Saturday, the ceremony was paused when her father walked out to greet her with a smile and a hug that seemed to last forever.

“It was my privilege to help coordinate this special reunion,” said Shaffer.
