Warriors Falter At Christiana Creek
ELKHART – If a golf course could be responsible for wins and losses, Christiana Creek could make that claim Thursday. Unusually high scores from all three teams had NorthWood struggle to a 164 to best host Elkhart Memorial’s 170 and Wawasee’s uncharacteristic 181 in Northern Lakes Conference play.
NorthWood’s Dylan Gessinger and Memorial’s Frankie Iavagnilio both carded 40s to claim medalist honors on a course Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone described as having long roughs and fast greens.
NorthWood, moving to 9-2 on the season and 4-0 in conference play, added 41s from Ryan Thompson and Payton Grubbs and a 42 from Brayden Glaser.
Memorial, which are now 16-2 on the season and 3-1 in the NLC, used a 41 from Brendan Sherwood, 44 by Michael Foy and 45 by Drew Stutz.
Wawasee, which shot 21 strokes worse than it did two days ago against No. 5 Warsaw, settled for a best-score 44 by Jeffrey Moore, two 45s from Mason Germonprez and Tristen Atwood and 47 from Luke Jackson.
The disastrous scoring was an eye-opener to Coverstone, whose club drops to 8-5 overall and 0-3 in the NLC.
“We really played poorly,” began Coverstone. “We have been playing pretty well so it is a surprise. We made 16 double bogeys or worse. We have to learn to be patient when a course is playing difficult. Tristen parred his last four holes to overcome a disastrous start. Way too many balls long, and we did not putt to the firm conditions.”
Wawasee will look to recover in the competitive Culver Academy Invite this Saturday, held at Mystic Hills Golf Course.
